Celebrate America's 250th Anniversary in Lancaster County this Independence Day
America’s story began right here in Pennsylvania, where the Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia to declare independence in 1776. As the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of that historic moment, Lancaster County is embracing the occasion with fireworks, patriotic concerts, historical exhibits, family-friendly festivals, and special America250 events throughout the region. If you're planning a Fourth of July getaway, you'll find no shortage of ways to celebrate while exploring one of Pennsylvania's most historic destinations. After a day of festivities, there's no better place to relax than the historic B.F. Hiestand House Bed & Breakfast.
Discover Lancaster County's Role in America's Story
Long before Lancaster County became a popular destination for visitors, it played a significant role in the nation's history. Founded in 1729, Lancaster served as the nation's capital for one day when the Second Continental Congress met here on September 27, 1777.
The county's America250 celebrations provide an opportunity to reflect on that legacy while exploring the places that helped shape the nation. One of the best ways to experience Lancaster County's history is through Discover Lancaster's America250 Passport. This free, yearlong program encourages visitors to explore 23 historic sites throughout the county while collecting stamps along the way. Participating sites include landmarks such as Lancaster Central Market, Ephrata Cloister, and many other locations that help tell America's story.
Celebrate Along the Susquehanna Rivertowns
Staying at B.F. Hiestand House puts guests in the heart of the Susquehanna Rivertowns, where Marietta, Columbia, and Wrightsville are planning festive Fourth of July celebrations along the river.
Marietta's annual celebration is known as one of the area's premier fireworks displays. Activities begin at 2 p.m. with a small-town carnival, food trucks, and family entertainment at War Memorial Park. Beginning at 4 p.m., Community Bible Church will offer additional family activities and food vendors. The evening concludes with fireworks launching around 9:15 p.m.
Riverfront Park in Wrightsville will host a full day of family fun, including a Kids Zone with face painting, bounce houses, and classic games. Food trucks, local artisans, crafters, and small businesses will line the park, creating a lively festival atmosphere. The evening wraps up with a breathtaking fireworks display over the Susquehanna River that lasts approximately 40 minutes.
Columbia is marking an impressive milestone of its own this year — its 300th anniversary. The town's free Independence Day celebration at Glatfelter Memorial Field begins at 6 p.m. and features live music by Pop Scotch, a Kids Zone with games and obstacle courses, a dunk tank, complimentary Kona Ice, hot dogs, chips, and water. Additional vendors will be on site before the evening concludes with fireworks.
Historic Rock Ford Leads America250 Celebrations
Historic Rock Ford has been designated one of Lancaster County's America250 focal points. Home to the beautifully preserved 1794 Gen. Edward Hand Mansion, the site will host a two-day semiquincentennial celebration July 2-3.
Visitors can enjoy live music, self-guided mansion tours, living historians, military and civilian reenactors, open-hearth cooking demonstrations, children's scavenger hunts, period dance demonstrations, and special exhibits focused on Lancaster's role during the Revolutionary era.
While visiting, be sure to see the site's Bells Across PA installation. The program features 108 artist-designed fiberglass bells displayed across Pennsylvania's 67 counties. Historic Rock Ford's bell, created by Landisville artist G. Robert Wagner, showcases many iconic Lancaster County landmarks.
Fireworks and Patriotic Music in Amish Country
The Barn at Paradise Station in Ronks will host its third annual Patriotic Concert and Fireworks Spectacular on July 3. Guests can enjoy food trucks, vendors, a makers market, games, and family activities before settling in for an evening concert featuring the New Holland Band, Perfect Harmony, and the Celebrate America Singers. Fireworks cap off the festivities.
Experience Lititz's Legendary Fourth of July Celebration
Few communities celebrate Independence Day quite like Lititz. Home to the nation's second-oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration, Lititz will host its 209th annual event on July 4.
The day begins with the Lititz Lions Patriotic Parade, which travels from Locust Street to Warwick High School. Activities continue at Lititz Springs Park with live entertainment, food vendors, and family-friendly activities.
One of the most memorable traditions is the Candle Illumination, which dates back to 1843. Thousands of candles line the stream and pathways throughout the park, creating a magical scene often called the "Fairyland of Candles." The evening also includes a spectacular combination of fireworks, drones, and laser effects.
Family Fun at Stone Gables Estate
Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown will host its annual Fourth of July Celebration and Fireworks Extravaganza at the Historic Star Barn and Ironstone Ranch. Visitors can spend the day enjoying food trucks, artisan vendors, train rides, a petting zoo, live entertainment, and plenty of open space before the fireworks finale. Admission is charged by the vehicle, making it a popular option for families.
Fireworks Celebration at Penn Medicine Park
The City of Lancaster and the Lancaster Stormers will host a free Independence Day celebration at Penn Medicine Park on July 3. Activities include bounce houses, pony rides, a petting zoo, lawn games, a car show, hot dog and pie-eating contests, and much more.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the evening. Before the fireworks begin, the Lancaster Symphony will perform live, creating a memorable soundtrack for the celebration.
